The sitter (1875-1942) was one of the four children from the second marriage in 1868 of Charles Frank Schroeder (1814-66) with Lucy Langdon (1841-1921); his first wife died in 1855. She was married in 1899 to Charles Hermann Stout (1864-1928) who was president of the New York Trust Company. They owned a house called ‘Charlecote’ in Short Hills New Jersey, a planned community created by developer Stewart Hartshorn. Henrietta was the author of The Amateur’s Book of the Dahlia (1922) and kept a prize-winning garden at ‘Charlecote.’
