The sitter was born in Staten Island on July 10, 1856, the son of Joseph Seligman, who founded the New York banking firm of J. & W. Seligman with his eight brothers, and died September 30, 1917. He married Guta Loeb in 1883. Joined banking business in 1876, and was a Trustee of a number of Reinsurance companies. He was on the financial committees of a large number of New York city societies and commissions, including the General Grant Tomb Association and the Hudson-Fulton Memorial Committee. He was the father of Joseph Lionel Seligman whom Muller-Ury painted in 1892.
