Portrait of an Unknown Boy
Description:
Head and shoulders of a boy, in an oval black frame. Oil on oval canvas, 11.3/8″ x 9.7/8″ (29.1 cm x 25 cm), signed and dated lower right ‘A. Muller 1879’. Slightly rubbed. On the stretcher is written ‘unbekannt Porträt Gemalt von Adolf Muller 1879 damals 17 Jahre alt. Behtser war Landweibel Wirz — Sarnen’.

Provenance:
A label on the reverse of the picture explains the provenance:
‘Porträt eines unbekannten Kindes, gemalt von Adolf Müller 1879 mit 17 Jahre als Schüler von P. Melchior von Deschwanden, Stans, Besitzer war die Familie des Landweibels Wirz in Sarnen, dessen Tochter sich mit Franz Zimmeier-Wirz, Untere Zäune 5, Zürich 1, einem Kleinen Antiquar, verheiratete und von dem wires fur Fr. 75, statt wie ursprünglich verlangt Fr. 250, erwarben in Juli 1932. Möglich weise stellt das Bild ein Glied der Familie Lanweibel-Wirz dar.

The Urner Wochenblatt, Altdorf, 19 July 1947, mentions this picture in the artist’s obituary. Its says that after the paper had published a notice for Muller-Ury’s 70th birthday in 1932, this picture was discovered in the attic of a private house in Zurich, though it had originally hung in the Rathaus in Sarnen. The same author Dr. E. Wymann wrote the label on the back of the picture.
