The sitter was born on 31 January 1888, but died on 12 May 1891. In the James J. Hill Papers (Hill Family Collection, Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul) there is a Voucher for payment (No. 1163) dated 3 August 1891 for $1000 for this portrait, which it says was painted in St Paul in July 1891, a note on the voucher saying that it was presented to Governor William Rush Merriam by Hill. Obviously, it must have been painted posthumously from a photograph.
