UNKNOWN SITTERS

This section of the catalogue includes a quite large number of pictures of which a photographic record exists, or for which an actual portrait is known, but which remain for the present unidentified. As is so often the case with the work of portrait artists, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish a portrait from a ‘fancy picture’, that is a depiction or study for a person that looks like a portrait. Some pictures may have been portraits, others may just have been works of the imagination. The website editor would be grateful to anyone who can identify a portrait listed in this section, or who possesses a portrait here, and enables him to place the work in the list of A-Z sitters.
