The sitter was born on September 30, 1813. He was a millionaire chemist, head of Powers & Weightman of Philadelphia. When he died on August 26, 1904 aged ninety-one, he left his entire fortune to his granddaughter, Mrs. Anne Maria Walker which was estimated at $60 million. She commissioned Müller-Ury’s first portrait of Pope Pius X in 1907 and in 1908 became Mrs. Frederick Courtland Penfield.

The Catholic News, New York, January 18, 1908, says mistakenly that the picture was of Mrs. William Weightman.
