The sitter was born in Titusville on January 17, 1873 and died there on March 28, 1959. She was the daughter of Burritt Newton Hurd (1843-1907) and Louise Harriet Hurd (1843-1909). She was the second wife of John Hinsdale Scheide.
Painted in 1934. The first sitting took place on December 13th, 1933. The artist noted at the back of his 1934 diary that Mrs. Scheide’s portrait was the first picture he had painted after returning to New York from seven years in San Marino, California.
