The portrait as it looked originally before it was reduced in size.
The canvas has been cut down to fit a smaller stretcher, and at the same time the colour of the dress has been changed, and the background darkened. This may have been a second version of the original picture taken by the sitter which was painted for exhibition purposes.
The duotone photograph of the picture before being reduced in size in the artist’s papers bears the stamp of Mary Hopson.
