The sitter in this portrait was identified from a photograph by Nicholas M. Turner in 1987.
The sitter was a singer and friend of Jessica Dragonette, through whom the commission to paint this portrait must have come during the Second World War. He had homes in New York and in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California. See also his telegram to the artist under DRAGONETTE, Jessica (1940).
The duotone photograph in the artist’s papers is stamped Peter A. Juley & Son.
