Madonna & Child

Description:
Oil on canvas, 40” x 30”, signed and dated lower left, ‘Muller-Ury, 1919’. The picture has a frame which is gilt, Renaissance-altarpiece in style, and has an arched centre with carved pilasters to either side and a square pediment above and carved flowers curled below.

Sold, Plaza Art Galleries, 9-11, East 59th Street, New York, Friday Evening, December 5, 1947, Sale 2813, Lot 139 (Fetched $85.00 – marked copy in Frick Art Reference Library), presumably purchased by Mr. Joseph C. Bossong, by descent to the present owner.

This picture was photographed by the talented amateur photographer Harriet V. S. Thorne (1843-1926), a member of the New York Camera Club, many of whose photographs were donated to the Connecticut Historical Society’s Museum and Library by The Rosalie Thorne McKenna Foundation (Acquisition: 2011.344.146).
