The sitter was born on 26 April 1852 in Italy, and became a priest in 1875. He was made Archbishop of Stauropolis and was elevated on August 28, 1902. He later became apostolic delegate to the Phillipines. He died on 22 July 1904.

In a letter written in Italian from Berne on March 20, 1888 (Archdiocesan Archives, St. Joseph’s Seminary, Yonkers, New York — AANY G-83, Folder 16) Muller-Ury tells Archbishop Corrigan of New York:

‘Io mi tratteni [sic] quest’inverno a Monaco (Baviera) ove dipinsi pure il ritratto di Monsignor Guidi che S[uo] G[razie] conobbe l’anno scorso a New York.’
