The drawing is a reversed copy, and therefore almost certainly following an engraving, after a portrait of a young girl, sometimes claimed to be Princess Charlotte of England, daughter of King George IV, by the German painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873) which has always been in the Belgian Royal Collection, and today hangs at the Château de Laeken.

For the original portrait see the exhibition catalogue, Franz Xaver Winterhalter and the Courts of Europe 1830-1870, National Portrait Gallery, London 1987-1988, No. 66, p. 211 and the colour plate on p. 143.
